Age Rating
  • These ratings help caregivers determine whether a video game, movie, TV show, or app is appropriate for their child based on age. A common one is when a video game is rated “E” for Everyone. It is important to check the rating of video games by their makers, as well as the platform it is on.

App
  • This is a software program that is primarily used on mobile devices, but some are made for computers. They vary hugely and can be anything from an internet browser, a mobile game, to a simple calculator.

Bias
  • A tendency to believe that some people or ideas are better than others. For example, family members on social media may only share news stories that support their world view or political leanings.

Bookmarks
  • Bookmarks can usually be found along the top of your browser, or in your “bookmarks” tab on mobile. They are placeholders for websites, so you can quickly access them, like a physical bookmark.

Cyberbullying
  • Harassment, intimidation, or threatening behaviour through online channels.

Catfishing
  • When a person pretends to be someone else online by creating a fake social media profile. They may enter into romantic or friendly relationships with people under this false identity and may even exploit money from their victims.

Consent
  • When everyone involved in a sexual activity knows about and voluntarily agrees to everything that is happening.

Doxing
  • When someone maliciously reveals someone’s personal information to a large group of people. This can include their legal name, address, phone number, financial information, place of work and passwords to online accounts.

Explicit Content
  • This can refer to offensive language, pornographic material, violence, and abuse.

Face Tuning
  • This is shorthand for how people may edit, enhance, or retouch photos and videos before they post them online.

Grooming
  • When a predator builds trust and emotional connection with a child so they can trick and exploit them. This can be done by an adult or another child or teen. Grooming can happen online or in-person.

Influencers
  • A person or group on social media that gets paid by companies to recommend products to their followers.

In-App Purchases
  • This refers to extra content or subscriptions available for purchase within an app. Many apps can be annoying to use unless you purchase the additional features or can have paywalls to access more levels, features, etc.

Nudes
  • This is slang that refers to photos and videos that show people naked, partially naked or sexually posed.

Parental Controls
  • These are features on digital TVs, computers, video games, mobile devices and software that help caretakers restrict their children’s access to inappropriate content. This can include usage controls, content filters and monitoring software.

Usage Controls
  • These help caretakers limit time spent on devices, or access to certain apps. They can also include keeping devices or the Internet password protected.

Content Filters
  • These can block inappropriate types of content but shouldn’t be relied on.

Monitoring Software

Phishing
  • This is the illegal practice of sending messages or emails to people, while posing as a reputable company, in order to steal personal and financial information.

  • This is a small window or banner that quickly pops open when a user opens a webpage.

Screentime Limits
  • Setting a daily maximum of how long you or a child can spend using an electronic device.

Search Engine
  • A tool that can be used to find websites through keyword search. Google is the most popular.

Strong Passwords
  • Passwords that are designed to be hard for people or computers to guess. They should include more than 14 characters, uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and symbols. Do not use the same password for multiple accounts and never share them. Each account should have a unique password. There are many tools available to help you manage passwords online. Use a reputable password manager to keep your personal information safe and secure.
